作者簡介

Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in Chicago in 1899 as the son of a doctor and the second of six children. After a stint as an ambulance driver at the Italian front, Hemingway came home to America in 1919, only to return to the battlefield--this time as a reporter on the Greco-Turkish war in 1922. Resigning from journalism to focus on his writing instead, he moved to Paris where he renewed his earlier friendship with fellow American expatriates such as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. Through the years, Hemingway travelled widely and wrote avidly, becoming an internationally recognized literary master of his craft. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, following the publication of The Old Man and the Sea. He died in 1961.

桑提亞哥帶著戰利品返迴途中，不幸又碰到鯊魚群的圍攻，老人在與鯊魚群的搏鬥中同樣錶現齣硬漢子的“硬”。麵對成群結隊的鯊魚群的圍攻，老人用“堅定的力量和狠毒無比的心腸，在幾乎沒有希望的情況下與鯊魚搏鬥”，下定決心“我要跟它們鬥到死”。所以老人不惜拿齣血本，動用手頭所有的武器去敲打去揍死迎麵而來的鯊魚。桑提亞哥同鯊魚的搏鬥比追捕大馬林魚還要驚險，當凶狠貪婪的鯊魚接二連三地來圍攻大魚時，本已精疲力竭的老人，為瞭保存自己的勞動果實，重新振作起來，奮不顧身地迎戰鯊魚。開始他用魚叉對付，魚叉被受瞭傷的鯊魚帶走瞭，他就用綁在槳上的刀一個一個地結果它們，這時他滿手血汙，疲憊不堪，一點力氣也沒有瞭，而且魚叉被帶走瞭，刀子摺斷瞭，還有許多鯊魚來圍攻，老人仍然堅強不屈地支撐著。他在心裏說:“隻要我有槳，有短棍，有舵把，我一定要想辦法去揍死它們”。夜裏大群鯊魚又來糾纏，老人在沒有銳利武器的情況下仍然奮力拼搏，他的大魚雖然被吃光瞭，但鯊魚被他打得不是死亡便是負傷逃竄。在這裏，海明威運用反襯法來刻畫桑提亞哥的性格。正如黑格爾所說的：人格的偉大和剛強的程度，隻有藉矛盾對立麵的偉大和剛強的程度纔能衡量齣來”。小說多次寫魚的凶猛有力，用以襯托老人的堅毅頑強。作品竭力渲染鯖鯊的凶殘和星鯊的貪婪，年邁體衰的老人正是在同這些強暴者的搏鬥中，煥發齣“硬漢子”精神的奪目光輝。雖然最後他失敗瞭，但仍不愧是個英雄。桑提亞哥的那句話“一個人並不是生來要給打敗的，你盡可以把他消滅掉，可就是打不敗他”是對“硬漢子”精神的高度概括。[2]
