The subject mater is primarily an expansion of the Mathematical Preliminaries section in Knuths c1assic Art of Computer Programming, but the style of presentation is more leisurely, and individual topics are covered more deeply. Several new topics have been added, and the most significant ideas have been traced to their historical roots. The book includes more than 500 exercises, divided into six categories. Complete answers are provided for all exercises, except research problems, making the book particularly valuable for self-study.

Oren Patashnik 著名計算機科學傢，BibTeX的創始人之一，是位於拉荷亞的通信研究中心的研究員。他1976年畢業於耶魯大學，後來在斯坦福大學師從Knuth，1980年就職於貝爾實驗室。1985年與Leslie Lamport閤作創建瞭BibTeX（LaTeX的一種工具，用於管理文獻、産生文獻目錄）。
