内容简介
Joel Sartore's most memorable eye to eye grizzly bear experience was when he was charged by a mama bear protecting her cubs near Brooks Falls, Alaska. They say not to run if a grizzly charges you. Joel didn't. His feet were frozen to the ground. When the mama ambled off to collect her cubs a mere ten seconds later, Joel sat where he had stood. He wondered if he'd survive this assignment - photographing grizzly bears for the National Geographic Magazine . Well, he did, and his knowledge of bears and his incredible photographic collection of them grew, both to be featured in Face to Face with Grizzlies . He contrasts the ancient range of grizzlies when they used to roam down as far as Mexico with their current status, mostly in Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. He looks at the future of grizzly bears - and how much that future depends on people.

"The face of the grizzly on the cover is enough to get any kid to open the book and start turning the pages. Sartore and a host of others were poised to photograph the famous fishing bears of Brooks Falls, Alaska. Normally there is no problem—the bears are too busy feeding—but on this day Sartore almost had a run in with a mother who was feeding with her two cubs. Fortunately he did the right thing and escaped unharmed. His photographs are spectacular, such as the grizzlies with a snow covered range or a fabulous skyline in the background. Sartore shows the bears at play, chasing prey, and being tranquilized and outfitted with a radio collar so their movements can be tracked. He notes that grizzlies outside of Alaska are having a hard time with the incursion of humans, fires, and disease. The final pages address how readers can help protect the bears, and also how to become a budding animal photographer. If a young reader is working on a report, the facts-at-a-glance, glossary, and find-out-more sections will be particularly helpful. The latter includes printed materials as well as web sites. An excellent book for school, public library, and home use. Look for other titles in the "Face to Face" series."
