Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre has been around for approximately 164 years, as well as being one of my favorite books since I first read it at the age of twelve. In those 164 years, Jane Eyre has undoubtedly undergone a great number of book design transformations. I can’t presume to say that I’ve seen them all, but I will say my favorite of recent years is the 2008 Penguin Classics hardcover edition.
Jane Eyre is part of a series of classic novels designed by the talented Coralie Bickford-Smith. The first thing I love about the series: no dust jacket! The books are designed to look like patterned textiles, so the images are printed directly onto the fabric cover. Second thing I love: the built-in ribbon bookmark! (Something about a built-in bookmark makes it feel more scholarly. ) This may be odd, but whenever I pick up this book, I can’t help but want to smell it…and each time I feel a mild surprise that it doesn’t have that great old book smell. The design of the book gives it the feel of an antique.
