Maurice Sendak received the Caldecott Medal for Where the Wild Things Are. He has also received the Hans Christian Andersen Medal, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, the National Medal of Arts, and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.

他自己写作并配插图的作品还有：《坚果图书馆》（Nutshell Library）（1962年）、《乱七八糟，砰！》 （1967年）、《七个小妖怪》（1977年）以及讲述发生在一名婴儿和两名流浪人之间的故事的《我们与杰克和盖伊都沮丧》（We Are All in the Dumps with Jack and Guy）（1993年）；由他设计插图的的作品还有：《七个故事》（Seven Tales）（1959年）、《刺松树及其他故事》（The Juniper Tree and Other Tales）（1973年）和《亲爱的小莉》（1988年）；《凯迪克奖与公司：书籍图片注》（Caldecott & Co.: Notes on Books and Pictures）（1988年）是桑达克的儿童文学随笔集；桑达克还为《魔笛》等歌剧和其他舞台表演设计场景和服装；他还与美国剧作家托尼·库什纳合作创作了剧本《大黄蜂》（2003年），这本图画书描写了二战期间德国集中营内的一群孩子表演的一场戏剧。
