11歲前的鄧斯特一直在新澤西州的布裏剋鎮（Brick Township）生活，並在此就讀蘭尼學校[9]。1993年她的父母分居後，她與弟弟跟隨母親來到加利福尼亞州的洛杉磯，並在北好萊塢就讀勞雷爾·霍爾學校（Laurel Hall School）。1995年，母親提齣瞭離婚，次年鄧斯特開始進入聖母高中（Notre Dame High School）就讀，這是一所位於洛杉磯的私立天主教高中。[5]
