小說的情節非常奇持：拉曼卻地方一個鄉村的小紳士叫吉桑諾，將近五十歲，身段頎長，麵孔瘦削，有一匹瘦馬，還有—支長矛．一麵舊盾，傢中有—個四十來歲的女管傢，一個二十來歲的外甥女，還有一個幫工，一般生活可以維持，但並不大富裕。他有—個嗜好是喜讀騎士小說，讀得入迷瞭，不打獵，不管傢事，後來竟然把土地賣瞭去買這類書，並見人就與人議論書中的義理。從黑夜到白天，從白天到黑夜，他每天這樣談，以緻腦汁漸漸枯竭下去，終於失掉瞭理性。他腦子裏滿是魔法、戰車、決鬥、挑戰、受傷、漫遊、戀愛、風波以及書中種種荒唐無理的事，凡是書中所寫的他都信以為真。於是發生奇想，為瞭增進自己的聲名利謀求公眾的福利，他要去做遊俠騎士，把書中見到的都實行起來，去解救苦難，去親曆危險，去建立功業。他於是結馬起瞭名為羅齊南脫，意為從前勞役的馬，找齣矛和盾，把一個鄉間女子臆想為身為騎士的自己的夫人，便齣瞭村子去行俠仗義，遊走天下。
