小说塑造了人类文学史上一个平民英雄的形象：古巴老渔夫圣地亚哥出海八十四天都一无所获，但他却并未绝望，zui终钓上了一条大鱼。

他和大鱼在海上搏斗了三天，才将鱼杀死，并将其绑在小船的一侧。归程中大鱼一再遭到鲨鱼的袭击，圣地亚哥凭借仅有的工具和鲨鱼展开恶斗，zui终战胜了鲨鱼，但回港时他捕到的鱼却只剩下了脊骨和尾巴。

“人可以被毁灭，但不能被打败。”

这是一部立意和结构都十分独特的小说，也是文学史上的一颗瑰宝。不去考虑可能被过分解读的类比和隐喻，海明威那种“硬汉”式的精神以及他对人自身力量的信仰在字里行间表现得淋漓尽致。

讲述了一位老人只身到遥远的海域捕鱼的故事。在连续八十四天没捕到一条鱼而被人嘲笑的情况下，老人终于独自钓上了一条大马林鱼，但这条鱼实在是太大了，竟然在海上拖着老人的小渔船游逃了三天，zui终筋疲力尽，老人才得以将它杀死并绑在了渔船的一边。

可惜在归程中，老人不断遭到鲨鱼的袭击，到岸时这条大马林鱼只剩下鱼头、鱼尾和一条脊骨。尽管如此，老人却从未服输。
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal — a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss. Written in 1952, this hugely successful novella confirmed his power and presence in the literary world and played a large part in his winning the 1954 Nobel Prize for Literature. An old Cuban fisherman triumphs over a giant marlin--only to have his prized catch literally eaten away by circling sharks. 

海明威（Ernest Hemingway，1899～1961） 美国小说家、诺贝尔文学奖获得者。 1899年7月21日生于芝加哥市郊橡胶园小镇。父亲是医生和体育爱好者，母亲从事音乐教育，从小酷爱体育、捕鱼和狩猎。 1923年发表处女作《三个短篇小说和十首诗》，随后游历欧洲各国。 1926年出版了长篇小说《太阳照常升起》，初获成功，被斯坦因称为“迷惘的一代”。 1952年，《老人与海》问世，深受好评，翌年获普利策奖。     

1954年获诺贝尔文学奖。卡斯特罗掌权后，他离开古巴返美定居。因身上多处旧伤，百病缠身，精神忧郁， 1961年7月2日用猎枪自杀。

Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established Hemingway as one of the greatest literary lights of the twentieth century. His classic novella The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He died in 1961.
