貓頭鷹（也作梟"xiāo" ，鴞"xiāo"）眼周的羽毛呈輻射狀，細羽的排列形成臉盤，麵形似貓，因此得名為貓頭鷹。它周身羽毛大多為褐色，散綴細斑，稠密而鬆軟，飛行時無聲。貓頭鷹的雌鳥體形一般較雄鳥為大。頭大而寬，嘴短，側扁而強壯，先端鈎麯，嘴基沒有蠟膜，而且多被硬羽所掩蓋。它們還有一個轉動靈活的脖子，使臉能轉嚮後方，由於特殊的頸椎結構，頭的活動範圍為270°。左右耳不對稱，左耳道明顯比右耳道寬闊，且左耳有發達的耳鼓。大部分還生有一簇耳羽，形成像人一樣的耳廓。聽覺神經很發達。一個體重隻有300剋的倉鴞約有9.5萬個聽覺神經細胞，而體重600剋左右的烏鴉卻隻有2.7萬個。

本目鳥類瞳孔很大，使光綫易於入眼，視網膜中視杆細胞（隻有一種視覺色素，即視紫紅質能辨明暗，不能辨細節和顔色）非常豐富，卻不含視錐細胞（在強光刺激下方會被激活，有三種視覺色素，能辨細節和顔色），以至眼內成圓柱狀（而非球狀），對弱光也有良好的敏感性，適閤夜間活動。
