　　雖然小說第二條綫主要講的是巴剋斯人，但關於巴剋斯人的描述當中，最重要的其實是關於人類存在的本質。人類各種的思想與情感本質上是神經脈衝，與電腦無異，因此邏輯上可以如同電腦係統一樣，彼此連接、共享各種知識與記憶。而隻要這些知識和記憶持續存在某個係統當中，無論身體是否毀壞，個人都可以永續存在，當然也可以藉由將記憶轉移到某個人類大腦裏，達成“重生”。

　　《時間漩渦》最主要的故事情節在第二條故事綫上，也就是一萬年以後的世界。在這個世界裏頭，地球早已經因為資源耗盡而渺無人煙。部分的人類通過未知智慧生物所建立的時間拱門移民到其他星體，其他的人類則隨著資源的浩劫而滅亡。在這一萬年後的世界裏，存在一個稱為巴剋斯的移動堡壘，上頭住著的是由地球人進化而來的巴剋斯人。巴剋斯人在齣生後便被安裝上節點，用以連接到主服務器上。因此巴剋斯人如同獨立的電腦終端，透過連接形成知識與情感的共同體，集體決策也集體行動（這個設定很類似於另一部科幻小說《群》）。
