人類的所有文明都具有圖畫敘事的傳統，文字也起源於圖畫，中華民族也一樣。從考古發現來看，中國的長江、黃河流域都存有我們祖先留下的圖畫：如岩畫、陶器繪製、壁畫等，這些都可以看成是中國最早的用圖畫敘述事件的記錄。夏商周青銅器上的圖畫、秦漢時代的畫像石、魏晉南北朝的墓室壁畫、五代兩宋的捲軸畫、明清的戲麯、小說木版插畫，總體而言，這些插圖，雖具有瞭初步的說故事的能力，卻缺少一個很重要的元素，它們全都不是站在兒童的視角來講述故事，它們並不是“為兒童”的作品。而兒童作為一個獨立的個體，一定是要到五四運動以後，纔能被發現。
