毛姆的文字有一種功力，宛若思特裏剋蘭德的繪畫那般，傾盡瞭全力的描述，把讀者帶入瞭一個拋棄一切而追逐藝術的精神境界。也許，沒有完全帶入，隻是在某個瞬間，如一束陽光照亮瞭讀者的心。透過這書陽光，我看到瞭天空的一角。

1892年初，他去德國海德堡大學學習瞭一年。在那兒，他接觸到德國哲學史傢昆諾·費希爾的哲學思想和以易蔔生為代錶的新戲劇潮流。同年返迴英國，在倫敦一傢會計師事務所當瞭六個星期的練習生，隨後即進倫敦聖托馬斯醫學院學醫。為期五年的習醫生涯，不僅使他有機會瞭解到底層人民的生活狀況，而且使他學會用解剖刀一樣冷峻、犀利的目光來剖視人生和社會。他的第一部小說《蘭貝斯的麗莎》，正是根據他從醫實習期間的所見所聞寫成的。
