　　我重又低头看书，看的是比维克①的《英国禽鸟史》。一般说来，这本书的文字部分我不大爱看，但是有几页导言，我虽说是个孩子，却也不能完全当作空白翻过去。那几页导言写到海鸟常去的地方；写到只有海鸟居住的“孤寂的岩石和海岬”；写到挪威的海岸，从最南面的林讷斯内斯角②或者纳斯到北角③，沿着海岸线，点缀着许多海岛——那里，北冰洋卷起巨大的旋涡，围绕着世界尽头光秃凄凉的海岛咆哮，大西洋的惊涛骇浪激荡起落，注入风雨交加的赫布里底群岛④。

　　“简，我可不喜欢吹毛求疵或者寻根究底的人；再说，小孩儿这样打断长辈的话，实在可怕。找个地方去坐下来。不会说讨人喜欢的话，就别多嘴。”休憩室的紧隔壁是一间小小的早餐室。我溜进了那间屋子。那儿有一个书架。不一会儿，我就拿到了一本书，我特意挑一本图画很多的。我爬上窗口，缩起脚，像土耳其人那样盘腿坐着，把波纹红昵窗帘几乎完全拉拢，我就加倍隐蔽起来，仿佛坐在神龛里似的。

　　我倒是很高兴，我素来不爱远距离的散步，特别是在寒冷的下午。对我来说，在阴冷的黄昏回家实在可怕，手指和脚趾都冻僵了，还得听保姆白茜的责骂，弄得心里很不痛快，而且自己觉得体质不如伊丽莎、约翰和乔奇安娜·里德，又感到低人一等。
