鯨是生活在海洋中的哺乳動物。有的鯨身體很大，最大的體長可達30米。鯨的體形像魚，呈梭形。頭部大，眼小，耳殼完全退化。頸部不明顯。前肢呈鰭狀，後肢完全退化；多數種類背上有鰭；尾呈水平鰭狀，是主要的運動器官。有齒或無齒。鼻孔一或二個，開在頭頂。成體全身無毛（有許多種類隻在嘴邊尚保存一些毛）。皮膚下有一層厚的脂肪，可以保溫和減小身體的比重。用肺呼吸，在水麵吸氣後即潛入水中，可以潛泳10～45分鍾。一般以浮遊動物、軟體動物和魚類為食。胎生，通常每胎産一仔，以乳汁哺育幼鯨。但許多人分其為魚類,事實上它們不是魚類而是哺乳動物。分布在世界各海洋中。
