当图画书这一概念或这一词汇出现在中国读者的视听范围内时，对它感到陌生的读者不禁要问：是不是就是漫画，或者卡通？　　很多对图画书已有认识的读者和阅读推广人都会肯定地说不是。我们单从绘画的创作上来看，卡通和漫画的创作除去基本的纸、笔之外，还有一些特殊的辅助工具，诸如网点纸、笔刀、压网刀、拷贝台等，这些辅助工具帮助绘者画出效果统一的背景或规整的纹理，做　　出相同的造型拷贝等。某种程度上说，这也造成卡通、漫画有其固有的绘画风格和模式。　　从这一点上来看，图画书与卡通、漫画绝不相同。到目前为止，我们看到的图画书大部分都是采用传统绘画的方法，如铅笔、水彩、丙烯、油画、油画棒，甚至有木刻和套印等特殊技法的运用。近二三十年来，图画书的创作手法越来越丰富多元，很多画家在创作同一本图画书的时候都不会仅限于利用一种颜色或技法，他们将各种手法结合，甚至在一些书里除了不同的绘画技法之外，还融入类似于浮雕或者实景照片与图画拼贴等多种综合手法。但是这些创作的过程，都是全手工的艺术创作，不存在模板或拷贝等方法，绝不复制。每一幅图画都可以成为一幅精彩的美术作品。可以说，图画书的绘画风格千变万化，没有画家尝试不到的，只有读者意想不到的。
