Oxford University Press (OUP) is the largest university press in the world. It is a department of the University of Oxford and is governed by a group of 15 academics appointed by the Vice-Chancellor known as the Delegates of the Press. They are headed by the Secretary to the Delegates, who serves as OUP's chief executive and as its major representative on other university bodies. 纸的出现，约在西汉时期，史书正式的纪录是公元一○五年。由于纸张具有轻柔及低廉的长处，因而，很快的成为生产图书最主要的材料。纸出现以后，虽然解决了图书生产方面的许多问题，但是生产图书，犹停留在逐字逐本的抄写，既费时又费力，还是欠缺方便。人们遂从长期使用印章和捶拓碑碣文字的经验中，启发了雕版与印刷技术的结合使用，便捷快速的生产图书方法，终于发明。以古法示范造纸过程。

有了文字，首先需要寻找写刻的材料。最早书写材料都取自于自然界，如：石块、树皮、树叶、兽皮、兽骨及动物的甲壳等等，都是其例。但这些材料，各有缺陷，无法充分发挥文字的纪录功能。春秋战国时代，知识日渐普及，着书立说，大行其道，为应需要，简书和帛书乃相继产生。「简」是用竹或木制成狭长的条片，书写时，由上而下，一片一片接续下来，然後再依顺序由右而左的排列，并以绳索加以编连，这样一部著作，便能连贯而完整。帛书是丝织品写成的图书，由于帛性柔软又轻便，携带及阅读均感便利。只是简书笨重，帛书昂贵，都不利于知识的普及及图书的长期发展，因而人们又发明纸张来取代它们。

对口袋书没有完全准确的界定，大抵是指开本小于小32开，印张大致不超过10个印张的书。口袋书的兴起，最早可以追溯到1935年7月在伦敦出版的“企鹅丛书”，这套丛书3年间销售2500多万册，获得巨大成功。口袋书从此流行于世并引发了一场“纸皮书革命”，对欧美国家的出版业产生了深远的影响，甚至与美国发明柯达克罗姆彩色胶片一起列入20世纪的人类发明、人类冒险和不寻常的事件当中。
