Gabriel García Márquez was born in Colombia in 1928. His many books include The Autumn of the Patriarch; No One Writes to the Colonel; Love in the Time of Cholera; a memoir, Living to Tell the Tale; and, most recently, a novel, Memories of My Melancholy Whores. Gabriel García Márquez was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982.

《霍乱时期的爱情》是马尔克斯获诺贝尔奖后出版的第一部小说，也是他最看重的一部作品，作家本人自认为是自己最好的作品，说是这部小说与《百年孤独》一样，在写完后使他有一种“被掏空的感觉”，可见作家动用的写作“储备”之厚重及用力之巨。此外，这部小说在写法上也值一提。一般认为马尔克斯是拉美“魔幻现实主义”的代表（《百年孤独》确实大规模地运用了这一手法，令读者如醉如痴，堪称杰作），其实他在写作中并不遵循既定轨道，而是经常使用一些不同的手法。本书就放弃了《百年孤独》中大肆使用的“魔幻”手法，而改用与十九世纪欧洲艳情小说类似的写法，但因为作家在其中贯注了丰厚的人生体验，又不能以简单的艳情小说视之。全书显得浓墨重彩，颇具韵味，以此赢得了巨大的赞誉，各国不少名家对之都有很高的评价。英文版《霍乱时期的爱情》有多种版本，本书是较为便宜的一种。
