本書作者愛德華索普1932年8月14日齣生在芝加哥，父親曾經參加過一戰。索普是最早使用純數學技術賺錢的人之一：先是拉斯維加斯21點的賭桌前,後是華爾街。索普小的時候很是淘氣，到瞭高中後就開始琢磨賭博。1954年索普進入加州大學洛杉磯分校攻讀物理學的研究生，但是仍然在思考輪盤賭博的事情，事實上這也是量化思想的起源：用數學來描述輪盤賭背後所隱藏的看似隨機係統的機製。索普相信，他有能力製造齣可以對輪盤看似隨機的運動進行統計預測的機器。
