前言/序言

　　本套叢書是數學大師給本科生寫的分析學係列教材。第一作者E.M.Stein是調和分析大師（1999年Wolf奬獲得者），也是一位卓越的教師。他的學生，和學生的學生，加起來超過兩百多人，其中有兩位已經獲得過Fields奬，2006年Fields奬的獲奬者之一即為他的學生陶哲軒。
　　這本教材在Princeton大學使用，同時在其它學校，比如UCLA等名校也在本科生教學中得到使用。其教學目的是，用統一的、聯係的觀點來把現代分析的“核心”內容教給本科生，力圖使本科生的分析學課程能接上現代數學研究的脈絡。共四本書，順序是：
　　I．傅立葉分析
　　II．復分析
　　III．實分析
　　IV．泛函分析
　　這些課程僅僅假定讀者讀過大一微積分和綫性代數，所以可看作是本科生高年級（大二到大三共四個學期）的必修課程，每學期一門。
　　非常值得注意的是，作者把傅立葉分析作為學完大一微積分後的第一門高級分析課。同時，在後續課程中，螺鏇式上升，將其貫穿下去。我本人是極為贊同這種做法的，一者，現代數學中傅立葉分析無處不在，既在純數學，如數論的各個方麵都有深入的應用，又在應用數學中是絕對的基礎工具。二者，傅立葉分析不光有用，其本身的內容，可以說，就能夠把數學中的幾大主要思想都體現齣來。這樣，學生們先學這門課，對數學就能有鮮活的瞭解，既知道它的用處，又能夠“連續”地欣賞到數學中的各種大思想、大美妙。接著，是學同樣具有深刻應用和理論優美性於一體的復分析。學完這兩門課，學生已經有瞭相當多的例子和感覺，既懂得其用又懂得其妙。這樣，再學後麵比較抽象的實分析和泛函分析時，就自然得多、動機充分得多。
　　這種教法，國內還很欠缺，也缺乏相應的教材。這主要是因為我們的教育體製還存在一些問題，比如數學係研究生入學考試，以往最關鍵的是初試，但初試隻考數學分析和高等代數，也就是本科生低年級的課程。長此以往，中國的大多數本科生，隻用功在這兩門低年級課程上，而在高年級後續課程，以及現代數學的眼界上有很大的欠缺。這樣，導緻他們在研究生階段後勁不足，需要補的東西過多，而疲於奔命。
　　那麼，為彌補這種不足，國內的教材顯然是不夠的。列舉幾個原因如下：
　　1．比如復變函數這門課，即使國內最好的本科教材，其覆蓋的主要內容也僅是這套書中《復分析》的1／3，也就是前一百頁。其後麵的內容，我們很多研究生也未必學到，但那些知識，在以後做數學研究時，卻往往用到。
　　2．國內的教材，往往隻教授其知識本身，對這個知識的來龍去脈，後續應用，均有很大的欠缺。比如實變函數（實分析），為什麼要學這麼抽象的東西呢，從書本上是不太能看到的，但是Stein卻以Fourier分析為綫索，將這些知識串起來，說明瞭其中的因果。
　　因此在目前情況下，這種大學數學教育有很大的欠缺。尤其是有些偏遠學校的本科生，他們可能很用功，已經很好地掌握瞭數學分析、高等代數這兩門低年級課程，研究生初試成績很高。但對於高年級課程掌握不夠，有些甚至未學過，所以在入學考試的第二階段——麵試過程中，就捉襟見肘，顯露齣不足。所以，最近幾年，各高校亦開始重視研究生考試的麵試階段。那些知識麵和理解度不夠的同學，往往會在麵試時被刷下來。如果他們能夠讀完Stein這套本科生教材，相信他們的知識麵足以在分析學領域，應付得瞭國內任何一所高校的研究生麵試，也會更加明白，學瞭數學以後，要乾什麼，怎麼樣去乾。
　　本套叢書由世界圖書齣版公司北京公司引進齣版。影印版的發行，將使得這些本科生有可能買得起這套叢書，形成討論班，互相研討，琢磨清楚。這對大學數學教育質量的提升，乃至對中國數學研究梯隊的壯大，都將是非常有益的。
