平克的《语言本能》一书，正如其书名所示，其主旨即在于论证语言是人类的一种本能。而既然是本能，就表明语言能力是先天的，且这一能力为人类所普遍拥有。语言有其普遍的文法结构，而各自然语言之所以在表面上差异巨大，只因其相关参数不同。这一承继自乔姆斯基的普遍性思路，对文化相对主义颇多批评。
