　　語言學上的喬姆斯基傳統認為，每個人都具有先天的語法知識（inborn grammar knowledge）；這種先天的語法結構使得地球上所有自然語言的基本語法都是相同的，這套基本語法被為原則（principle）；而各種自然語言都有一些相對細微的差彆，這些差彆被稱為參數（parameter）。所以，幼兒習得語言的過程就是學習參數的過程；通過瞭解參數，幼兒能夠將先天的語法轉換為各種特定語言的語法，從而快速地習得語言。這套理論被稱為“原則/參數”理論。
