在《語言本能》這本書中，平剋用淺顯的語言以及生動的例子介紹瞭各種各樣的理論與概念，因而也使得書中的信息量很大。但我認為書中也有一個明確的主旨：就是力圖錶明人類多種多樣的語言背後都有一個共有的、堅固的結構。平剋在書中花瞭大量筆墨證明語言的普遍性。他在書中介紹瞭喬姆斯基的普遍語法理論、提齣語言模塊性以及思想語言假說，並且引入達爾文進化論來解釋語言起源，這些理論或概念都在暗示語言有一個堅固的內核，它不會受文化因素的影響。在書的最後一章，平剋明確反對各種文化相對主義和標準社會科學模型（Standard Social Science Model, SSSM）。
