在《語言本能》這本書中,平剋用淺顯的語言以及生動的例子介紹瞭各種各樣的理論與概念,因而也使得書中的信息量很大。但我認為書中也有一個明確的主旨:就是力圖錶明人類多種多樣的語言背後都有一個共有的、堅固的結構。平剋在書中花瞭大量筆墨證明語言的普遍性。他在書中介紹瞭喬姆斯基的普遍語法理論、提齣語言模塊性以及思想語言假說,並且引入達爾文進化論來解釋語言起源,這些理論或概念都在暗示語言有一個堅固的內核,它不會受文化因素的影響。在書的最後一章,平剋明確反對各種文化相對主義和標準社會科學模型(Standard Social Science Model, SSSM)。
