不管是在蕞爾小島，或是莽莽林原，或是熙攘鬧市，布萊森總能在尋常的景物或人事中發現不尋常而值得一寫（有時是大書特書）的東西，並挖掘笑料，生發齣獨特的觀感。麵對差強人意的現實，他能領略有缺陷的美。他寜可用冷嘲的口吻對讀者詳述所見所聞；除瞭極個彆的動情的例外，決不贊同在旅行紀實文字中作浪漫主義的美化，兼發矜誇高論。應當說，這既是布萊森寫作的特色，在不同程度上，也是現當代旅行紀實文學的共性。“文革”期間某位意大利導演在中國這片異域以上述手法拍瞭一部紀實電影，結果被江青大批特批，其實如果瞭解上述手法普遍性的話，那批判多半是對著影子打拳瞭（shadow boxing）。
