首先，要認真讀一本書的“序”和“跋”。序、跋是一本書的重要組成部分，讀瞭序和跋，可以大緻知道書的內容。有些書的“序”是作者自己寫的，主要談寫書的宗旨和經過，有些書的“序”是作者請彆人（多半是某方麵的專傢）寫的，主要是介紹或評比本書的內容和特色。有的書的前言，實際上也是序的性質，有些書的後記，實際上與跋的性質類似。序一般是放在書的正文之前，有個彆的放在正文之後，如漢代史學傢司馬遷為自己的巨著《史記》寫的自序，就放在《史記》的末尾。序、跋是讀書指徑人門的嚮導，寫書評，不可不讀。
