霍比特人比尔博·巴金斯生活在宁静舒适、绿意盎然的夏尔，他喜爱自己的暖床和壁炉，喜欢在自己的袋底洞中与书籍和地图为伴，喜欢一个人吃饱肚子后静静地在门口的长椅上吸烟斗。然而，灰袍巫师甘道夫的到来打破了他的悠然生活，他带着十三个短粗矮壮的矮人走进了他的袋底洞，开启了比尔博的冒险历程。多年以前，一条来自北方的名叫斯毛戈（又译“史矛戈”）的火龙侵占了原本繁荣壮丽、黄金遍地的矮人都市——孤山伊鲁柏，矮人军队溃败，王子索林·橡木盾与族人流落异乡。如今，时隔多年，这伙人齐聚夏尔，就是为了协商重振旗鼓，光复孤山的计划，比尔博·巴金斯在甘道夫的劝说下最终加入了这支探险队伍。一行人离开夏尔，跨越丛林、草原、山地与河流，路上遭遇巨怪，脱险后又遭到阿索格手下的追杀，途中经过精灵据点瑞文戴尔和妖精哥布尔的深山领地，磨难重重，最终在悬崖边与阿索格团伙狭路相逢，索林·橡木盾险些丧命，比尔博及时出手，避免了悲剧的发生，紧要关头，甘道夫召唤巨鹰前来相助，一行人才逃脱了阿索格的魔爪。旅途中，小队曾有过短暂的分别，甘道夫离开矮人和巴金斯，矮人们和巴金斯走进阴暗又巨大的幽暗密林，又遭遇了蜘蛛和木精灵的侵袭，木精灵逮捕了矮人，巴金斯戴上他的魔戒消失，追随木精灵来到他们的王国，最终解救了矮人，辗转至人类的村庄。后来斯毛戈被杀死，五军之战后矮人和巴金斯去而复返
