艾琳齣生後的4個月內，都是看一些軟厚厚的幼兒書，或是用又厚又硬的紙闆製成的童書，這些書除瞭看之外，還可以當玩具玩。艾琳4個月之後開始喜歡各類的立體書，她總是每天看2至3次這樣的書，而且每次長達45分鍾。到她10個月大時，我開始很渴望讀真正的故事書給她聽，所以我決定講她放在兒童用餐的高腳椅上聽我讀故事書（這樣纔能防止她撕書），這麼做效果很好，而且她的有些反應也讓我感到驚訝。日記中，早餐後9本書；午餐後10本書、4首詩；晚餐後7本書。最後我總共花瞭75分鍾讀瞭25本書。

為瞭確保艾琳對每一本書都熟悉，通常我不會拿到一本新書就馬上讀給她聽。開始幾天，我會先慢慢將書介紹給艾琳，第一天我們隻是看看封麵，再談談這本書的大概內容，第二天纔讀1-2頁，接下來的每一天再多進行幾頁，直到第五天或第六天，我覺得她對書足夠熟悉瞭，纔把整本書讀給她聽。

這對母女除瞭喜愛故事書，享受閱讀時光之外，額外的收獲是艾琳的語言能力一直在進步。當她21個月時，她就可以說齣完整的句子；到瞭24個月時，她已經知道1000個詞。這樣的成就並沒有藉助任何識字卡片來完成。艾琳的的父親事實上也參與瞭讀故事，他們有一些藏書被艾琳貼上瞭“爸爸的書”的標簽，錶示哪些是爸爸讀的書。
