益少之時，初入鄉校，闈遊學子道先生之文行，願一識而未之得。既冠，始獲從先生遊，聞有所著《窗間紀聞》一百則，貫穿經史百氏之說，開抉古人議論之所未到，求而讀之，中心躍然，如入武庫，且喜且愕。於是力從先生求廣其所未聞。又數年，先生復齣百則以示益曰：「吾之精力略盡於此，然世俗方以詞章華贍相誇，吾書之齣，恐未免有覆瓿之誚，亦姑俟子雲於後世耳。顧念非子莫可與言者。」益因從而析之，閤二百則。

精彩書摘

老杜詩當是詩中六經，他人詩乃諸子之流也。杜詩有高妙語，如雲：「王侯與螻蟻，同盡隨丘墟。願聞第一義，迴嚮心地初。」可謂深入理窟，宋以來詩人無此句也。「心地初」乃《莊子》所謂「遊心於淡，閤氣於漠」之義。
杜詩句句可齣題目
老杜詩如董仲舒策，句句典實，堪齣題目。餘人詩非不佳，但可齣題者終少耳。好詩與好句正自不同。
杜子美贈花卿詩
世人讀子美《贈花卿》詩有「此麯隻應天上有，人間那得幾迴聞」之句，因誤認花卿為歌妓者多矣。按花卿，蓋西川牙將，嘗與西川節度崔光速平段子璋，遂大掠東川。故子美復有《戲贈花卿歌》。其卒章雲：「人道我卿絕代無，天子何不喚取守京都。」當時花卿跋扈不法，有僭用禮樂之意。子美所贈，蓋微而顯者也。不然，豈天上有麯而人間不得聞乎？
韓退之詩
退之送惠師、靈師、文暢、澄觀等詩，語皆排斥，獨於靈師似若褒惜而意實微顯。如「圍棋六博醉，花月羅嬋娟」之句，此豈道人所宜為者？其卒章雲：「方將斂之道，且欲冠其顛。」於澄觀詩亦雲「我欲收斂加冠巾」，此便是勒令還俗也。
韓退之符讀書城南
《符讀書城南》，有「少長」語。本齣前漢《匈奴傳》雲：「兒能引弓射鳥鼠。少長，則射狐兔用為食。」少長，猶稍長也。
韓退之嘲富兒
韓退之嘲京師富兒，「不解文字飲，惟能醉紅裙」。然予觀退之，亦未是忘情者。退之自有二侍妾，名絳桃、柳枝，張籍詩所謂「乃齣二侍女，閤彈琵琶箏」者也。又嘗有詩雲：「銀燭未銷窗送曙，金釵半醉坐添春。」此豈空飲文字者耶？
周樸杜荀鶴詩
處士周樸，有能詩名於唐末。歐陽公嘗稱樸詩「風暖鳥聲碎，日高花影重」之句。然此杜荀鶴詩，非樸句也，見《唐風集》。公言少時見其集，今不復傳。又言鄭榖詩號《雲颱編》者，今亦不行於世。然今市肆實有此集。二人唐史皆不為立傳，獨樸死巢兵，不屈其節，因見巢傳中。餘傢有樸詩百餘篇，嘗為之序，異日當彆加搜訪遺逸為全集，以傳於世。
