評分早年肄業江南格緻書院，繼之留學日本，畢業於東京日本大學。歸國後任兩江師範學堂日文譯教，至1911年凡六年。辛亥革命曾入皖督柏文蔚幕。爾後曆任安徽高等學堂教師，南京法政專門學校（後改法政大學）日文教席，並開老莊講座，又任《共和雜誌》社社長。1924年轉任杭州之江大學國學係教授兼係主任。1937年鼕，杭州陷敵，避居建德西鄉。1939年任湖南藍田國立師範學院教授。1943年任貴陽大夏大學文學院長兼中文係主任。1944年入蜀，與熊十力並任書院主講兼協纂。抗日勝利後迴上海。1948年任光華大學教授。解放後入華東師範大學。後轉入上海文史館。1962年應長春東北文史研究所禮聘講學。1966年返迴上海文史館。1973年辭職迴南京，病逝於傢。
