This amazing true adventure story about the discovery of the Lascaux Cave will have young readers feeling that they've discovered something pretty special, too!
In 1940, four teenage boys and a dog dropped themselves into a hole in the forest floor. Using a flaming grease gun as a torch, they ventured deep underground, eventually coming to a huge cave, the walls of which were covered with life-size paintings of animals. Whole herds of horses! Deer with horns as big as tree branches! Giant bison! The boys were amazed by their discovery. They'd stumbled upon the world's finest examples of prehistoric painting!
Perfect for classroom use, this Step 4 Step into Reading book is realistically illustrated by award-winning artist Bryn Barnard.

"I certainly remember hearing about the fabulous cave of Lascaux and had hoped to see them one day. The cave and the paintings of prehistoric creatures were discovered in 1940 by several boys while out hunting for rabbits. They were shocked when they went into the hole and traveled along the tunnel to a cavern whose white walls were filled with large paintings of animals. There were horses, stags with very large antlers, and a huge animal that looked like an ox. The boys wanted to protect their find so they contacted their former science teacher and he in turn contacted a priest who was an expert on prehistoric art. The paintings were apparently made in 16,000 BC and the creature that looked like an ox is actually an auroch, which is extinct. The cave has five rooms of paintings and later the caves were opened to the public and Marcel who had discovered the painting is one of the guards. Unfortunately—I will never see the actual paintings because all of the human traffic had a negative impact and the caves were closed to the public in 1963. There is a reproduction and pictures can be found in many books including the wonderful illustrations in this early reader. A real must for schools and homes, this scientific discovery should appeal to most readers. Once again this "Step into Reading" Level 4 book could be used in a high low reading program or for those learning English as a second language. "
