講述瞭微分流形和拓撲流形的結構的研究是現代數學的重要分支。隨著20世紀50—60年代Milnor發現高維球麵上的奇異微分結構和SmaIe證明瞭高維的Poincare猜想，流形拓撲學的研究進入瞭全新的領域，來自代數、代數拓撲和幾何拓撲的諸多工具得到瞭廣泛的應用。但是這也導緻這一領域的文獻較為分散和專門，不易被初學者所掌握。

　　於品和Garving K. Luli花瞭近一年的時間，將本書的法文版翻譯成英文和中文，期間，於品針對書稿中的名詞和證明方式和塞爾先生交流過，塞爾先生都一一作答，但基本意見都是堅持不改，並拿齣瞭諸如 google 搜索數來驗證自己的觀點。真是個固執的老頭兒。
