當美國知道蘇聯在古巴部署瞭核彈，就知道自己已經被逼入瞭死鬍同，沒有退縮的餘地。這是彼此就像兩個站在獨木橋兩側的大象，如果對抗，則雙方都會掉入河中淹死。這絕對是最壞的結果，美蘇對這一點是看的很明白的。除瞭最壞的選擇，剩下的選擇就是美國先下獨木橋或者蘇聯先下獨木橋，但是大國之間誰先退一步都是一種很掉麵子的事。
