数学物理以研究物理问题为目标的数学理论和数学方法。它探讨物理现象的数学模型，即寻求物理现象的数学描述，并对模型已确立的物理问题研究其数学解法，然后根据解答来诠释和预见物理现象，或者根据物理事实来修正原有模型。“数学物理”，是数学和物理学的交叉领域，指应用特定的数学方法来研究物理学的某些部分。对应的数学方法也叫数学物理方法。包括微分方程、作用量理论等多方面。

　在德谟克利特的哲学中，所有原子均由同样的实体组成，如果“实体”一词一定要在这里应用的话。现代物理学中的基本粒子同样是在受限制的意义上具有质量，就同它们在受限制的意义上还具有其他的性质一样。因为根据相对论，质量和能量本质上是相同的概念，所以我们可以说，所有基本粒子都由能量组成。把能量定义为世界的原始实体，就能解释这一点了。确实，它仍包含属于“实体”这个术语的主要性质，那就是它是守恒的。因此，前面已经说过，现代物理学的观点在这方面非常接近于赫拉克利特的观点，如果人们把他的元素火理解为能量的话。能量事实上就是运动之物；它可以称为一切变化的原始原因，并且能量能够转化为物质、热或光。赫拉克利特哲学中的对立面的斗争能够在不同形式的能量之间的斗争中发现。
